At eight am Monday morning, Josh and I braved the peak hour crush to drive our family members to the airport for their eleven o'clock flight to Honolulu. Airport runs are my least favorite things to do in the whole wide world, and yet I seem to make them with alarming frequency.

Julio was in an ecstatic mood until we told him he couldn't take his pets as carry-on baggage. Carina hadn't given us much time to organize the dog's rabies vaccinations for an in-home isolation period allowing her to bypass quarantine to travel to the islands. Dora couldn't have gone anyway. Hedgehogs are not on the list of approved pets. I bet rodents aren't either. Julio cried until Josh played Tiny Bubbles on his Hawaiian satellite radio station. Julio loved it when he heard the lyrics, and sang along with Don Ho.

"I love bubbles, Daddy!" he shouted from the backseat.

My father snored, my mom read her romance novel on her Kindle, and Carina fumed. She was in a rotten mood because Alberto hadn't spent the previous night with her. "I think he's avoiding me," she said.

I can't imagine why. "I'm sure he's just busy," I said. "Weekends must be insane for him in the restaurant."

She muttered something under her breath. I chose to ignore it and helped Don and Julio out on the chorus.

At the next set of lights, Josh helped out on air guitar. The three of us would make one hell of a band.

We dropped them at the United terminal, but Julio had a meltdown when he realized he was leaving me and Josh.

"Don't make me go, Daddy!" he implored, sobbing in my arms.

My mother placated him long enough to get him into the check-in line. He calmed down when Carina gave him her iPod to listen to.

"I want the bubble song, Mommy!" She grimaced and flicked her iPad on instead, letting him play his favorite game of Temple Run. I should have been grateful, but I was mortified that my son could be so easily seduced. As Josh dragged me away, I glimpsed Julio, now happily on his way to his first vacation without me.

"He's a kid. They're all like that." Josh put his arm around me. "Want to skip our gym class?"

"No!" I almost screamed. I needed the workout. I wanted to look good for both my men, especially since I'd been eating birthday cake for several days.

Josh was anxious to get to Palm Springs, however, even though check-in at the lake house wasn't until three. I managed to convince him the class would be a sexy start to our vacation and he reluctantly agreed. After it was over, we swung by the house, where Van was curled up on the sofa with Dora and Thor, watching horror movies.

Dora was on top of his chest, curled in on herself.

I would have been, too.

Thor watched wide-eyed as some co-ed got an ax in her head. I averted my gaze.

"I really don't think our pets should be watching such violent movies," I said.
